Do your bills get paid on time? We find people that have organization challenges often benefit from help in devising a bill-paying system that works for them. When bills are paid by their due date, late fees are not assessed. Misplaced bills and missed due dates are sources of frustration and stress.
Here are some ideas to help you get those bills paid:
- Use 3 file folders or manila envelopes that are marked 10, 20 and 30. This will be where you will accumulate unpaid bills that need to be processed by the 10th, 20th, or 30th day of the month. This will help you to prioritize bills by due date.
- Open mail in same place every day. This is also where you will also keep your 3 folders to collect the bills. Now you have the bills to be paid in one place. Take bills out of envelopes, note due dates and put in the appropriate folder. Allow adequate time for mailing or electronic processing.
- Keep bill paying materials together in a convenient basket. Don't forget envelopes, stamps, a small calculator and pens. You can take the basket of materials to a comfortable place to pay the bills as needed.
- Consider electronic forms of bill payment. Discuss what options are available with your bank representative.
- Pay the bills, as appropriate, on the 10th, 20th, and 30th of the month. You can adjust the timetable to the 1st and 15th or to whatever works best for you.
Keep your system as simple as possible. Get help from a trusted professional if you need it.
