Whether you are headed to the airport on a business trip or for spring break, it pays to check out current rules for new service fees for checked luggage. While rules vary with different airlines, the trend in air travel is for user fees when it comes to some checked luggage.
User fees are charges that apply only to those who actually use services such as baggage check-in. We are beginning to see charges for checking more than one bag or for oversize bags such as golf clubs.
Planning ahead will help you maximize your travel experience. Here are some tips to consider before your next trip:
- Carry the permitted luggage with you rather than checking it. If you are able to handle the bag and it does not exceed the airline's size limits, you could save time and fees. There are wonderful wheeled bags with comfortable handles that have multiple compartments for organizing your travel needs. You will save time and avoid the luggage claim area at your destination.
- Join a your favorite airline's frequent flyer club. Club member status may give you perks such as reduced checked luggage prices or preferential treatment in the event of the need to rebook a flight at the last minute.
- Wear clothing to avoid packing it. Wearing several layers will eliminate the need to pack bulky clothing. Check the weather predictions for the area to which you are traveling to make sure you have appropriate clothing.
- Keep it simple. Take only what you need. Make decisions at home rather than taking multiple clothing items with the intent of deciding later.
