School supplies are appearing in the stores. Your child's school typically provides lists of supplies that are needed for the activities at school. Let's provide our ADD/ADHD children a designated space for supplies and for doing schoolwork in the home. Chronic disorganization is a challenge for many students.
Here are some ideas for making this the best year ever for your ADD/ADHD and/or chronically disorganized student:
- Buy duplicates of supplies. Prices are as low as they will go during the back-to-school sales. Extras will be on hand when you need them.
- Keep supplies near where they will be used. Designate a storage shelf or a bin that will hold only school supplies and related items such as a pencil sharpener.
- Designate a school station. Unload the backpack here. Set the musical instrument and gym shoes there to remember to take them in the morning. The key is to keep everything together in the same convenient place.
- Use a dry-erase board for Way-to-Go notes. Several colored markers will let both child and adult communicate in fun ways.
- Display one or more analog clocks. Clocks with a dial and sweep hands help a chronically disorganized person relate to the passage of time.
The new school year is near. Prepare to have a great year by planning ahead. These organizational skills will serve your child during the school year and in many years to come.
